TMS therapist vs regular therapist

Since I am still awaiting a lot of test results for possible neuropathy and autoimmune disease on top of neuralgia I have started seeing a TMS therapist PRIOR to learning I may have some more serious/complicated conditions. I like her a lot but I have to be TMS all the way and therapy i focused strictly on that.

Then I scheduled an appmt with a clinical psychologist. She believes I need to deal with and heal from all the recent stressors (meaning past 2 years) in addition to reducing the fear and anxiety related to my pain.

With the TMS therapist I like that she is solely focused on exercises and techniques however I also would like to be able to work thru and process the major life stressor's from the past. I think that this may be more helpful now until I get to the point where all my medical tests r done and I have worked on confronting the stressors. Because exercises and techniques r good but maybe not at this time.

Any thoughts - do many people with TMS seek a TMS therapist only or is it also common to seek general therapists while continuing to read TMS books and do the exercises adjunctively?

Thanks!

I am confused. Does the TMS therapist want you to do physical exercises/ techniques or psychological exercises as in SEP? As long as it's psychological it will probably help.

I only see a general therapist for counseling. However, he does agree that my pain was due to stressors in my life. I'd guess a general therapist/counselor would be fine for anyone with TMS unless they try to talk them out of the TMS diagnosis.

They might not know about the specific strategies that Dr Sarno suggests i.e. When you feel the pain, focus on your anger, push through the pain as much as possible, realize you are healthy (get rid of meds, appointments, physical therapy, etc). I doubt you can get well without this info.

No doubt about that. You have to have that information first. However, as long as they accept all that I think they can still help with emotional struggles.
