    Hi kminford:

My advice for many newcomers over the years has been to NOT ask these types of questions.

The fact is that TMS is the existence of unnecessary pain or some other symptom, which is created by our brains in order to distract us. This is what Dr. Sarno teaches us. What it really means is that our brains can create any type of pain or symptom that it thinks will cause you to worry and to stay on the alert for danger. To that end, it's almost guaranteed to create a symptom that is unique to you, and not comparable to anyone else. This means that it is a waste of time (and can become an obsession) to try to compare symptoms.

We always want to remind newcomers that they should have been medically checked out for any condition that is of concern.

Then the best way to get started is to read one of Dr. Sarno's books. The one I recommend was his last one: The Divided Mind. Then you can start doing the free Structured Educational Program on our wiki, which will also educate you about the mechanism of TMS.

    Good luck!
