Spoke to second non TMS therapist about TMS.

I'm thoroughly perplexed by this, you're at a TMS forum, a TMS doc spends 1.5 hours with you, does palpation for the TMS tender points I assume, says you have TMS and you say he's a quack and it was a joke. I wish that was the answer I came home with when I saw a TMS doc, I would have been tickled pink.

BR, can you please explain what was the outcome you were hoping for? How much did you pay? From what you wrote, and my understanding of TMS diagnostic visits, that's what they are like. Can you explain in more detail why you feel he was a "quack" and how an hour and a half exam was a "joke".

Thanks

Basically he told me that anybody Tms was all in my head and the 1.5 hours was mainly spent on his experience with tms patience and how we have it all in our head and had to work threw our emotions...nothing that you can learn from this site. I felt it was a waste of time and money. Nothing that my pcp did not tell me. That's all don't want to mention names.

I am doing ok I hope u are also....u made the right decision by not going if your medical dr clears you....it's tms no need to goto tms dr unless u need that extra reassurance.

I see a Therpist once a week I journal and meditate

Boston Redsox, getting an all clear "IT'S TMS" from a TMS physician should be HUGE to one's recovery. I wish I was told that, instead I was told it's NOT TMS, get a hip replacement. I'm still perplexed that you weren't tickled pink with that DX--what more were you expecting? What more was it that you wanted that doctor to do for you or to you???

Just want to share my experience with Dr. Schubiner from last summer. He spent nearly 2 hours with me. It was messy talking through a few things and at the end of the visit, the tender points (more like straps of iron on top of tender points) were free of tension. ("I see this a lot," he said, adding that working through some of the emotions releases the tension in the muscles.) He is a gentle healer in every sense of the word.

When I received my EOB from my insurance, I was utterly shocked. It was chump change. I've had 5 minute ortho evaluations that cost far more than his in-depth evaluation.

I sent him a thank you note.

I agree with you Andy but u didn't pay out of pocket for your Ortho, that's what aim saying. I believe tms dr offer a great service reassuring people of tms. But what I am saying if u been threw all the test and got a clean bill of health by your pcp and specialist .....that should be evidence enough that it's tms.

Boston Redsox, I respectfully disagree. My years of doctoring only reinforced my fear of structural issues because everyone had a theory, a diagnosis. No one ever told me there was nothing wrong. For me, given the severity and length of my TMS, I felt I needed to take the step of hearing it from an authority like Dr. Schubiner.

I only mentioned the reimbursement rates to show how the insurance industry makes traditional medicine much more lucrative than TMS medicine.

Northstar

I understand where your coming from I have been to a tms dr and found it to be a waste of time....yes he spent 1.5 hrs with me and discussed many things and emotional issues along with a exam. He read my medical history as so fourth. After numerous hundreds of dollars I did not find myself anymore convinced that I had tms. Know if u want to discuss a tms Therpist I did find that very helpful.

Ah, I hear ya, Boston! That's too bad about your experience, btw. I would love to do some therapy with a TMS but that's just not in the budget right now. I'm grateful for all the support here in the meanwhile!

Hi Boston Red Sox,
Did you find TMS therapist more helpful than a regular therapist?
If Dr. Shubiner would be in the area I would definitely give it a try otherwise I am afraid it would be a waste of energy especially that going to see doctors I find to be very stressful which usually does not help the symptoms.

Yes I found it to be very helpful did about 6 session than transferred over to a non tms therpist and she was guided threw with my history found it to be very beneficial. money well spent ( it was done via Skype )

I understand where you are coming from, and to be honest I don't know what I wanted him to say, I guess it was a different experience for you then I. Maybe it's just my anger lashing out to this whole ordeal we all are going threw?

Not all TMS docs were created equal. I haven't said anything up until now and I don't wish to name and shame but as we are on the subject...I went to see a TMS doctor a while back for severe back pain and sciatica. I was asked to discuss why I believed I had TMS so I elaborated on my childhood issues, current stressors and personality traits. I may as well have had my mouth taped shut because the resulting diagnosis was made purely on the MRI report I had brought along (just the report, not the imaging) and a general physical examination. This person declared that I did not have TMS at all but had suffered a prolapsed disc. My back would no doubt recover, I was told, unless I was unlucky. That there was my nocebo. I spent ages being angry and upset. It was in total conflict to everything I had read in Healing Back Pain/Mindbody Prescription. I even went back to my osteopath thinking that heck, if it's physical, I'll treat it as such. My osteopath is such a sweetie but even though he sincerely believed he could help me, his efforts were in vain. I enjoyed his company and decided what I really wanted was to have a nice chat and a laugh with him, to connect with someone in a meaningful way. Alas I put an end to the camaraderie after several sessions and told him I was going to get better on my own. I wasn't one of the 'unlucky ones' because I refused to believe that rubbish so my back recovered. I basically got to a point where I ignored what I was told and accepted that I had had a major setback for reasons that would become clear later. I had faith in my own intuition that was telling me I was absolutely fine, that my symptoms were indeed TMS. I'm actually glad now that things worked out the way they did. Perhaps the TMS doc did my a big favour.

As for psychotherapists, I totally agree with what Dr Peter Zafirides always says, the most important element is the relationship between the client and therapist - not whether they are TMS therapists. Granted I wouldn't want to speak with someone who was opposed to a mind body approach but many forum posters have found help from therapists other than those on the TMS practitioners's list. I lasted about 18 months in therapy but as I was going around in circles like a broken record I decided to go it alone in my own time, in my own way.

Yb

Thx so much for your input....I agree that not all dr are equal....and regarding going around circles with your Therpist that is true but I am going to go around a few more times because new things seem to pop up.

I beg to differ, call one of the tms doctors or therapist on this list see what they are charging for a session, its incredible amount, and I am all for capitalism . though they give us a incredible service for the ones who can afford it, but for those who can't it hard to get needed medical advice other than there pcp who accepts health insurance.
The Dr. I will see (one I believe enough),
Is covered by insurance, but charges 200.00 for a lecture,(not covered by insurance) not to mention he's going to want me to have an MRI, Insurance WON'T cover that completely, not to mention a 5 hour dr. One way, and a possible stay overnight at a hotel! No one on either side does anything for free!

In my opinion Mark that's is more stress than it's worth , I can tell by your post. If u already had the proper tests by a md and he as cleared you. Move on to tms healing

It's Dr. Gwozdz I have to see, the LEAST I should have gotten was him talking to me on the phone for a good 5 or 10 minutes, seeing as how he WANTS ME TO GET AN MRI, ( not to mention a 200 dollar lecture )which my own primary is to order. What reason is my primary going to give for ordering this? A 5 hr. Drive???, you've got to be kidding me, I am highly skeptical and disappointed!

I stay away from doctors and hospitals. I don't trust either of them and hey, sick people go to them
and we may catch what's going around there.

I am so glad I learned about TMS two years ago. I'm a healthier, happier person and it only cost
me a few dollars for used copies of TMS books. Most of that I could have even gotten free in
subforums of TMSWiki. What a great place this is, run and frequented by caring, helpful people.

Maybe instead of seeing a doctor, donate a few bucks to keep the TMSWiki going.
