pain from muscle tension or oxygen reduction?

readytoheal

Could someone clarify for me whether pain is from reduced oxygen generated by the brain or muscle tension..or both? Muscle tension seems to be part of the puzzle or is that just another distraction to keep me thinking it is physical? This all starts to make my head spin trying to understand!

Does it matter what the precise biological mechanism is, if the origin is psychogenic? Anyhow it's a bit chicken and eggish, no? Cut off oxygen to a muscle and it probably gets tight. Tighten a muscle and it probably gets underoxygenated. Your head truly will spin if you go into this trying to reconcile all the theories and explanations you see people put forth, and it won't serve you well to focus on the minutiae.

Hi @readyto heal u have got some good advice from the above 2 posters.

Although the pain will appear very physical in nature don't let that in any way deter u from thinking psychologically. After all the purpose of the pain is to keep u focused & what Dr Sarno tells u is that it is exactly what u must not let it do. It doesn't matter one bit what is causing the pain. The mind body connection is a complex one & one affects the other. You can learn how to be in pain but by the same token u can also unlearn it.

Pain is a learned response. It's a question of breaking the cycle & changing how u react to the pain. How u choose to do that is entirely up to u. U can ignore the pain, journal, meditate, take up a hobby, medicate, look at personality traits that may be causing tension etc.

Good luck!

As stated well by the forum members above, or below, depending which side of the internet equator you are on, the pain originates in the brain, the sub-c part. Dr. Sarno said, the mechanisms that create TMS symptoms don't matter, that the human mind is so complex, the technical causalities may never be discovered. De-conditioning by DOING is the key to reversing the symptoms--Just Do It! Sitting around ruminating on the negative will give you the latest TMS epidemic, "Dormant Butt Syndrome":

Dr Sarno said if a pill were made that ended TMS he would not prescribe, because it treats the symptom. He is the only Doctor to have figured this out. And the world ignores him.
Great quote from the GOOD DOCTOR! A hundred years from now many of today's allopathic practices will be considered voo-doo--but, ER medicine can be a life-saver.

Does your muscle tension change location or strength with time? If the answer is yes, then it is obviously TMS. TMS can cause changes in the body that seem organic, yet they are psychogenic. Everybody now agrees that acne, rosacea or eczema are result of stress. How would muscles be different? Do you notice that your jaws get tense when you are stressed? Do you notice that your neck and upper back muscles get tight when you are stressed? Muscle tension is more likely to be caused by TMS than any other reason.
