new here- feel like I don't get it

Stress is not the cause of your symptoms - the stress comes from the repression of negative emotions that come up as the result of outside stressors, which is subtly different. Most of us are "stressed" because we take on too many responsibilities, which is the result of not knowing how to say NO, which is the result of wanting to be agreeable so people will like us, because that's how we survived childhood and either got positive attention from our parents, or avoided negative attention from our parents.

So- this would be an example of where I don't see myself here. Maybe it's because I'm misusing the word "stress"? I guess I would say my problem is more anxiety than stress, as 99% of my negative emotions are internally generated. I've managed to retreat so deeply into a safe place for myself due to a lack of self-confidence out in the world that there aren't a lot of outside "stressors" left to worry about!! (ie. I'm not the person who takes on too many responsibilities or says yes to doing things I don't want to do!).

The structured program is very much about examining stress and the causes of stress in one's life.

I appreciate the input regarding the alternative healthcare guy I've been seeing. I haven't met many more skeptical people out there than myself in regards to this sort of stuff so I get where you're coming from. :) It was a real stretch for me to try out this guy and I've viewed it as an attempt to open myself to ways of thinking that I don't usually possess. (by the way- they didn't charge me for the injections and I felt they were harmless). Accepting TMS as a possibility falls into the same category. I get that this can be done on ones own without spending a dime but there are the TMS specialists that also charge for their time so gee, I don't know...
He describes what he does as addressing the structural, chemical, and emotional aspects of the body which seems to make sense to me and answers more of the questions I have about why doing certain activities obviously exacerbate the pain (not only recognizing stressors or old/new emotional triggers)- something that I'm not finding answers to here.

A TMS physician is a real medical doctor (M.D.) many of them have been trained by Dr. Sarno, after seeing him for their chronic pain having exhausted all traditional all0pathic medicine avenues. TMS physicians are few and far between and I would highly recommend seeing one for an objective opinion if one is stuck.

A TMS psychotherapist or practitioner is someone who understands TMS and can help explain it if someone is stuck. This should not take too many sessions, Don Dubin, (deceased) who worked with Dr. Schechter, told me he never had to do more then a dozen sessions to get the TMS message across.

Careful there, you might end up with electroshock or a lobotomy--although electroshock is coming back into favor, along with leeches--"Everything old is new again". Dr. Sarno, renamed TMS and the acronym now stands for : "THE MINDBODY SYNDROME" .

My New Year's resolution is to have a dollop of cocaine with my Coke, as the pharmacist who invented it originally intended--goes well with original recipe KFC.

BTW, as someone already linked to I think, there's a list of TMS physicians, therapists and practitioners in the sidebar of the homepage, get a work-up, a skype or phone one if you're stuck.
