It Didn't Start With You by Mark Wolynn

mike2014

Beloved Grand Eagle
Hello All,

I've just stumbled across a really great interview with Mark Wolynn which builds on the work of leading experts in post-traumatic stress, including Mount Sinai School of Medicine neuroscientist Rachel Yehuda and psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score. Even if the person who suffered the original trauma has died, or the story has been forgotten or silenced, memory and feelings can live on. These emotional legacies are often hidden, encoded in everything from gene expression to everyday language, and they play a far greater role in our emotional and physical health than has ever before been understood.

A short interview

A longer interview, which starts at around the 9 minute mark and last approx. 20 minutes.

An extract of the audio book

I know some people get caught up in exploring their own repressed emotions and not being able to identify the cause, but the concept of inherited trauma may be applicable to all of us.

I hope some of you may find this of interest.

Very interesting Mike. Physical traits & personality can both be hereditary & are influenced by many factors.. So yes its not hard to understand how trauma may change both.

I'm glad you found it of interest, Mala. I think I'll be purchasing the audio book at some point.

I'll try and listen to these. Book sounds really interesting. I note that my family have their fair share of emotional baggage through events such as child deaths, mental illness and suicide. Lots of estrangement too. I completed a geneogram a few years ago during a training course for work. Very revealing but depressing too.

Your thread reminded me of a blog I read by an EFT practitioner who became interested in something called Family Constellations. Well, I looked this up and low and behold, there was Mark Wolynn. http://www.hellingerpa.com/constellation.shtml (What Are Family Constellations | Bert Hellinger Therapy)

Thanks for the link to the blog.

Wow, the piece on Family Constellations is fascinating, but I agree unearthing it could be traumatic and saddening in itself.

I've just revisted the blog and read the case studies. They make very interesting reading and it all fits in with the neuroscience summit.
