Hello all-
Forgive me if I post in the wrong place. I am brand new to the forum (to any online forum, really).
My name is Ally. I’m a 33 year old mom of 3, married to my post-high school sweet heart for 12 years—-and I have been suffering from chronic low back pain for 10 years.
It started when my first child was 8 months old, we had moved from Ca to TX a few months prior and were living with my parents. I picked up my baby off the floor and had to fling her to the couch as my back gave out (as to not drop her or fall on her). I’ve had chronic low back pain with flares of my back going out ever since. When my back is “out” I’m stuck in bed with constant heat, ice, and NSAIDs until I can get somewhat mobile again. Lately, I cannot sit, stand, or walk for much longer than 20-30 minutes at a time since the last time my back went out in August. I live terrified of the pain, it’s consequences, and how I’ll ever be able to take care of my children if this gets any worse.
I’ve seen a few doctors and chiropractors, all who refused to do an x-ray or MRI because of my insurance. I’ve been told it’s just a “bad back, doesn’t sound like disk/nerve involvement, and it’s probably due to having babies.” I’ve only ever been diagnosed with Diastasis Recti (my abdominal muscles are 2.5 fingers apart after pregnacies) and a physical therapist who I’ve seen recently said my “hips were upslipped” but after working with her for several weeks that beyond the diastasis, I have no more upslip and I *should * be painfree.
But I’m not. Same old back pain, now with twinges of sharper pain in different areas of the low back, sometimes hips, and lately now my left knee. I’m currently laying down with an ice pack as I type this due to sharp pain in the left side of my low back.
I came across the idea of TMS and Dr Sarno about a month ago and everything rang so true! I’m a hard core type A (well, type T) personality. Driven, perfectionistic, ultra responsible, and I suffer with a lot of fear and anxiety surrounding my family, finances, and the need to “do it all perfectly.” I’ve read Healing Back Pain, watched All the Rage, spent hours on YouTube listening to interviews with Steve Ozanich, Dr Hanscom, Dr Schecter, and watched dozens of TMS success stories.
I live in a suburb of Texas with no TMS doctors around, and my insurance is very limited.
So I guess my question is, is it necessary to have an MRI/X-ray done before I can proceed with the TMS treatment? And does the presence of the abdominal split (diastasis) exclude me from a TMS diagnosis (I am still working on it in PT)?
Thank you to anyone who has made it through my long winded post. I so desperately want to get out of pain and live my life again!
