If you are interested several of my posts cover most of my story. Here is the synopsis in order up to the date of writing this December 21, 2013

In the first 6 months of 2012 the following events occurred. I never thought of them as key to my experiencing MBS but looking back, like all things in life, they are critical to what brought to this very moment. 1. Business had been very tough.; 2. I stopped working with my life coach; 3. My tai chi class disbanded; 4. I started contemplating a new career.

Late that spring I woke up with a small ached in my right glute. Didnt think much of it. Throughout the rest of the year the ache got worse, more persistent more intense. I tried massage with a very smart PT. After the second session he said " I think you might have something going on in your spine. You should see a spine doctor."

Early winter of 2013 I went to a very compassionate and conservative spine surgeon. He wound up being instrumental in me avoiding an unneeded disc surgery. I also learn late in 2013 that he reads a little bit of Dr Sarno's work every day though he never brought it up until I did. He recommends physical therapy and self regulation over exercises.

June of 2013 I have my first MRI. shock of all shocks they find an average herniation in L4-L5 disc that may have come from a fracture in L4 that didnt heal cleanly. I never knew I had a fracture. The doc suggested it could have happen playing contact sports. I havent done that in over 10 years.

July 2013 my symptoms wake me up while on vacation. Over the next few months my sleep deteriorates to where I need 9 hours in bed to get 6 hours in bits in pieces. Im now altering my modes of travel due to discomfort. More PT which does nothing except for a small glimmer of 3 days symptom free.

August and September 2013. I read Healing Back Pain on the recommendation of a friend. My personality is on every page. I read Unlearn your Pain and check all but one of Dr. Schubiner's personality traits. Im convinced that MBS is part of whats going on but unfortunately I've had the traditional diagnosis and why wouldnt I believe it; I come from a medical family. I go to a neurologist who has experience with MBS personally and professionally. He checks me out. Agrees MBS is part of the situation. I stop PT because its not working and start working on Dr Schubiner's program daily. I also start meeting with a psychologist who has experience with MBS. Im making it through the day but not really progressing, at least in my symptoms

Early November. Im working out, dealing with pain and I feel an extra twinge. I wake up the next morning and cant move. Once Im finally able to get out of bed a least for awhile I try a new form of PT called the Mckenzie method. Its supposed to encourage the disc to go back into place. I start to feel a bit better. Still spending most of the day in bed. Interestingly though the type and location of my symptoms are pretty different and they move around a lot; even within 30-60seconds.

    December 5. I have a second MRI.

December 10. The doctor tells me theres no change. The Mckenzie method hasnt done anything and the big symptom shift was not accompanied by a structure change. This is the breakthrough. I reread Unlearn Your Pain and am struck by the story of a patient 20 years older than me, who has been on disability for 9 years, with 10 identified imperfections in her spine, 10x the number I have. this seals it. I am experiencing MBS

Since then: I have improved significantly. Stopped PT. Canceled consultation with a top spine surgeon for a second opinion. I do have an appointment at the end of January with the doctor who has taken over Dr. Sarno's practice but my gut tells me by then I will have improved enough that I wont need it.

    I have cance
