Welcome to the new TMS Wiki!

Forest

Beloved Grand Eagle
Hi everyone,

Welcome to the new TMS Wiki! If you're reading this, you've reached our new server. Thank you so much for your patience over these last weeks. I hope it wasn't too hard to be cut off from this community, and I'm so glad to have the doors open again.

How we got here. As many of you know, our old server ran on software that was very old. I've wanted to upgrade it for a long time, but the pieces of a site like this are interlocked — the forum, the wiki, and the system underneath them all have to move together, so there was no way to modernize one part without rebuilding the whole thing. That rebuild has been underway for more than a year. Then, eleven days ago, the old forum finally broke down completely and couldn't be repaired.

In consultation with Jan, I made a decision: switch over to the new server now, even though it is extremely unfinished. An imperfect server that people can access is far better than no server at all. This site is a community, and community members need to be able to reach their community. So here we are!

Fair warning: things aren't ready yet! Some things will look different, and some things will break. The biggest one: email isn't set up yet, so notification emails and password-reset emails don't go out, and new member registration is paused until that's fixed (otherwise new members would wait forever for a confirmation email that can't arrive). You can see the full list of known issues — and tell me what you'd like fixed first — in this thread: Please Pardon Our Progress.

If you're locked out of your account, email tmswikisignups@gmail.com from the same email address where you receive TMS Wiki notification emails so we can verify your identity, and I'll reset your password by hand.

The way forward. My first priority is choosing, configuring, and installing a mail service, so notifications and password resets work again and registration can reopen. After that, I'll be guided by your feedback in the thread above. I'll keep working to upgrade and polish the server, and we'll work together as we always have.

If you like tech, here's a brief progress report — otherwise skip it!
The new server runs current versions of the same core software, rebuilt from the ground up on modern infrastructure. Remember when I said that bringing our bookmarks, thread tags, and other add-on data across would be a long slog? It's done: every post, thread, member account, bookmark, and tag made the trip — over 170,000 posts across a decade and a half of discussions.

This community — the people who keep showing up, year after year, to support each other through recovery — is the real heart of the TMS Wiki. Now it finally has a foundation to match. It's going to be an exciting time, and it will be great for the wiki going forward.

Thank you again for your patience. It's good to be back.

What a wonderful surprise to wake up to these messages this morning and see that the community is already coming back! You can probably imagine that the forum was the first thing I checked, and it's great to see the activity.

Whew! So glad to be back, and so so grateful that Forest somehow managed to pull out all the stops in his already busy life to concentrate on getting us back online.

Thanks to @Cactusflower for alerting me offline, because I was not attending to the forum regularly, and wasn't aware that it had been down for several days. Based on its erratic behavior over the last year I wouldn't have alerted Forest right away in any case, and thankfully he was on the spot and ramped up the process as he described above.

The main wiki site was unaffected, and it took me until Monday the 20th to realize that I could edit the home page and post a notice. I'm curious if anyone checked the wiki and saw it - unfortunately it was almost a week after the forum went down before I did that.

Finally, FWIW, you might want to bookmark this subreddit that I created yesterday - it's like the emergency gathering place you and your neighbors establish ahead of natural disasters so you can stay in contact when normal communication is cut off:

Welcome back everyone!!!

~Jan ❤️
