I'm a bit up and down.. over the years,I've successfully recovered from RSI, foot/ankle pain, and long covid. I'm in another 'dip' with my second bout of long covid.
A few weeks ago, I got Covid again, and I immediately panicked about long covid. I bought an upgraded HRV and heart rate monitor and subscribed to the Visible app, which gave me 'pace points'. I tried to stay within them, but could only do it about 3 days a week and reined in as much activity as i could. I was already under a lot of stress at home and work when I contracted COVID again.... All of this creations a perfect storm for TMS to take hold.... Yet I still hadn't recognised it as that. I went away to see friends for a night, a catch up that I nearly cancelled due to my symptoms. These were chest pain, sore throat, cough.... And MASSIVE fear of PEM.
I took taxis everywhere, but on my way back to the train station I decided to walk with a friend. It was 0.3 miles - yes, of course I was measuring it! I was really worried, but felt so stupid getting a taxi that distance....
Anyway by the time I got to the station I was really brain fogged, and was feeling PEM in the form of an achey body feeling like I was coming down with flu. I didn't even have the energy to walk a few yards to buy a sandwich. I sat feeling very sorry for myself. I eventually got up the energy to get on the train.
Once on the platform, I had a thought, what if this is TMS?!.... So for the whole train journey I read up about it. Once at the other end, I decided to be brave, to start increasing my activity, to ignore pace points, and to repeat the mantra "I am well" as much as I could....
I walked more confidently once I got off the train, and I didn't get the brain fog and ache again that day. AMAZING!
About 3 weeks in and I'm doing well. But I still have symptoms and need to work really hard to override the brain. I've just been for a short walk, and before hand I had some worry thoughts....I've come back now and I'm achey... Hence turning to do some more TMS work! Good luck everyone, the brain is amazing, but you can rewire it.
