Hi Everyone. I'm Josh. I've had RSI in my hand, wrist, forearm and recently other parts of my arm going on almost 10 years. I used to be self employed selling different products on the internet and remember the pain started during a time when I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to be able to sell a lot, so that I could make a living. For the most part I've been able to manage to a certain degree by buying different ergonomic products, using braces, and sometimes taking ibuprofen. Within the past year I've gotten a couple tests done on both arms to determine if there was nerve issues and everything came back normal. Additionally, I was examined by a hand specialist and he could not find anything either. They told me that they didn't think it was carpal tunnel, so they couldn't recommend me for the surgery and they thought I might have tendonitis. They told me that I should just try and find a comfortable position at work and that they could give me a referral for physical therapy. I did not do physical therapy and I have just pretty much been managing up until this point. Although it seems like it has started getting uncomfortable even using all my "ergonomic" products. I'm currently working in an office environment at a computer all day and am going to be starting a new job with another company very shortly. I really want to get some resolution and closure to this problem as I have had some concerns about the amount of discomfort I have been feeling at work.
I've had the Mind Body Prescription book for about 6 months now, but admittedly when I first got it I kind of dismissed it. This weekend I read the entire book and it honestly felt like I was being described in a lot of what was being written. I really believe in my heart of hearts that I am somehow causing this pain with my emotional state. I feel that my RSI pain is TMS. I made a list last night of all the things that were bothering me and stressing me out.
When I got to work today I ditched my ergonomic keyboard and mouse and typed on my laptop and used an old wired basic dell mouse today. I worked for about 8 hours typing on my laptop and with the junky mouse. Honestly, it was a little uncomfortable. The discomfort came in waves and I would sometimes feel it in different parts of my arm. Everytime I found my self focusing on my arm I tried to interrupt my focus by focusing on the things that were stressing me out or the idea that the pain was being caused by my emotions and that it would not cause me any permanent damage.
I noticed that a lot of people with TMS RSI and carpal tunnel symptoms tend to ramp their computer usage up a lot slower. Maybe just doing 30 minutes a day, then 1 hour and so on. I don't have that ability because I'm making a living on the computer currently. So, is it a good idea to ditch the ergonomic products totally at home and at work and go completely cold turkey and work on the computer for 8 plus hours a day without these products that do provide me some relief? Or should I use my products for part of the time and gradually ween myself off of them? I do have some concerns that the pain might build and be worse tomorrow than it was today as my arms feel very worn out right now. I'm currently typing this at home with a more "ergonomic" setup.
Any advice or suggestions are more than welcome!
Thanks!
