Support group in Australia?

Hi All,
I live Qld, Australia and feel I would really benefit from a support group. We really have a very limited number of TMS specialists here (I am only aware of one). Does anyone know of any others/can recommend anyone? Would you be interested in starting a support group?

You should join us for our weekly drop-in chat on Saturdays. It is our online support group meeting and is from 3-4 PM EST. The time difference will probably be a problem, so I understand if you won't be able to join us.

Having in person support groups can be really helpful and this is a great idea. There were/are a couple other groups in other areas of the globe that have been doing this and it seems like they are successful. I think having one in Australia would be really helpful to a lot of people. I do know that there are a couple of wiki members who are from Australia. I'm not too sure where though, but it can never hurt to reach out to some folks and see what they think about it.

btw - who's the practitioner you know of?

Yes I will aim to drop in on the chat. It works out about 4am Monday morning for me!
I hope other Australians will find my thread, I have done so many searches to find any postive talks/workshops/support groups, all to no avail. The TMS word needs to be spread in this area of the Globe! The practioner I know of is Hal Greenham in Melbourne. Would be great, but distance is a problem if I wanted to see him regularly (a 3hr flight).

Keep up all your great posts- they have helped me many times!
 
Hi Samantha - I'm just dropping in to comment about the timing of our Saturday chat - having just scheduled a phone consultation with someone in Mumbai, a Saturday-to-Monday difference didn't quite sound right to me. (I'm such an accountant, I have to check these things out for myself).

Anyway, the chat is at 3pm Eastern US, which, unless I'm very much mistaken (or timeanddate.com is mistaken), seems to translate to 6am on Sunday, Brisbane time.

Not that I am likely to be up at 6am on a Sunday, myself (LOL) but it's a little bit better than 4am on a Monday!

Hope you read this in time (one way or another, it's going to be 16 hours from when I'm writing this)

Good job! I hope it was helpful. I enjoy meeting all the new people, but I had to stay away today - I'm in my (U.S.) tax busy season right now, really had to keep working on tax returns! Let's see, I think I volunteered to moderate in a couple weeks - yep, I'll be chatting on the 17th (18th for you).

Hi Samantha, Im from Sydney and have skyped with Hal before. He is a great guy and has a really good understanding of TMS and is a previous sufferer. For me it was great to talk to someone who knew what i was going through. But i still battle with the diagnosis part as im sure many do without access to a TMS doctor. We really need someone in this country who can diagnose/treat TMS, Especially when just like the rest of the western world we too have a pain epidemic in this country. Any TMS doctor's want to move to Australia?? We need you over here!

Yes I have skyped with Hal too. He is great and has alot of insight. However, due to technological issues, skype just left me feeling frustrated after the session asI had put so much hope into talking with him. If I can get down to see him I definately will, but long term is not too pratical. Keep in touch and those of us from Australia may be able to share information if we discover any therapists/new info etc.

It is great to hear that you spoke with Hal helped some. It can be really frustrating when you can't see a TMS doctor, but what is really the most important thing is to have someone rule out any serious medical conditions. A good primary care physician should be able to do this effectively. The one thing to keep in mind with any Mind body disorder like TMS, is that the treatment is done by you. A good physician can rule out medical conditions, but you have to do the work to recover and you have to investigate your emotions. I understand that it can be a little frustrating when you can't see a TMS doctor, but don't let that prevent you from recovering. Recovering from TMS invovles taking an active role in our treatment. I encourage you to read a TMS book and the wiki to educate yourself on this approach.

This approach works.

I'm Terry from Brisbane, though I lived on the Coast for many years. I am a psychologist (I even bulk bill), but am a complete newbie to TMS, so I am not much of a resource that way. But an Australia based support group sounds like a great idea. Great to know you are there!
