Day 3 Overcoming a Fear

Since my last flare-up of pain, which has now lasted five months, I’ve barely gotten any exercise outdoors. After reading a personal success story, I decided to go on a two-hour hike (uphill and downhill) because I realized that while my arms, hands, and shoulders were in pain, my legs were not. I was able to go on this hike with my husband, walking gently but steadily. I made it to the top of the mountain. Back home that afternoon, I experienced a tension headache (which often occurs for me after physical exertion), but this time I was able to handle it without judgment. I took a few deep breaths about every 10 minutes and spoke to my mind with love and clarity. The tension in my head didn’t get worse and eventually disappeared completely. That was a special experience.

Well done! I just started walking again too. It’s amazing how much the mind tricks us into thinking it’s safer to just sit and do nothing. When in reality, exercise is safe and being sedentary should create more fear than hiking. You’re showing your brain that it’s safe to be active. Eventually it will stop creating pain signals to stop you.
