Day 1 My TMS journey begins

I only came across TMS a week ago—I live in Switzerland. After watching several videos and reading some books, it hit me like a bolt of lightning. I recognized myself in so many of the descriptions, and I have no doubt that TMS applies to me. As a former psychotherapist with nearly thirty years of experience, I had never heard of it before. My initial experiments with my pain are promising. My body, my mind, and I are looking forward to the program. I asked my husband if he would do the program with me. I’m still waiting for his answer.

I’m about 4 months into discovering TMS and I too was shocked by how it described what I was going through. I’ve seen the process affect my symptoms. Some changes began quickly for me. Others have taken longer and still others I’m still working on, but it has been worth it. The SEP has also been helpful. I’m about two weeks into the program. My wife isn’t doing the program with me, but she’s been really supportive as she’s seen me go from hopeless and fearful to hope-filled and healing.

Thank you for your note. I can totally relate to that feeling of shock. I’ve been wandering aimlessly for decades, and no one can tell me what’s wrong with me. And suddenly, there are so many answers right in front of me. I’m glad to hear that your partner is supporting you on this journey and that you are in the program. That’s a real plus.

Indeed, @Rubynea, this comes under the heading of letting go of a couple of our most insidious and self-sabotaging characteristics, which are
(1) Unrealistic Expectations, and
(2) Pressure (which often goes hand-in-hand with Judgment).

This journey is unique and very personal to each individual, and I would not even recommend attempting to do it " with" another person. I can tell you that based on stories we've heard here, it's a blessing to have a partner who accepts that this is what you are doing for yourself and who does not try to pressure you into continued medical interventions!

These characteristics of the "TMS personality", Unrealistic Expectations and Pressure, are mind tricks that our brains use to keep us from moving forward. Don't be fooled! You've made a great start just by being here and taking the plunge to introduce yourself. Welcome!

Thank you for your kind words. I realize I still have a lot to learn. Just the first three days alone have cleared up a lot of things. I’m looking forward to this journey!

Thank you @Rubynea for bringing your thread into the wiki. I get a lot out of reading other’s posts and the responses to them. I’ve been doing the SEP for a bit more than 2 months and am now noticing how difficult it is for me to bring the insights that I glean from other’s threads into my own “life.” Although I’m the only one who can do my work, I’m grateful to the community that supports it.

I can really relate to what you’re saying. There’s a ton of information out there about TMS, as well as a ton of personal experience reports. Like you, I find it very inspiring to listen to others. But I’ve also come to understand that this program is simply about letting myself go each day without overthinking it.

And I take a similar approach with the journaling exercises: I just do them and let myself be surprised by what emerges. Congratulations on having been part of this for two months. I am more than happy to be in this community.
