Moderate exercise good for fibromyalgia pain

Dr James Alexander

TMS author and psychologist
Recent research demonstrates that rather than make fibromyalgia pain worse, the overall result is often a decrease of pain and associated symptoms. This finding is applicable to most forms of chronic pain. For further discussion, and tips on how to introduce exercise into your pain treatment plan, go to:-

It all comes down to how you view your symptoms. Being inactive makes you feel like you can't do anything and are a waste. This was, without question, the worst part of my symptoms. It is surprising at the effect being the smallest bit active can have on your overall mood. Feeling like you are not broken is a powerful thing.

As you mentioned both in this article and in your book pacing is key to becoming active again. The example you gave is a great way to go about it. Set a small goal that you can achieve every day, such as walk around the block, and do it regardless of how you feel. Doing too much too soon can lead to more doubts and frustrations.

Great article, Dr. James. It takes a leap of faith to believe that exercise won't hurt you, but it is really worth it. Exercise is so necessary for physical and mental health.
