What is one of your best memories from your childhood?

I have to admit this question shook me up a bit. It struck me with the realization that I've always focused on problems, traumas, and negativity from the past, and never ever on anything good. Wow...

I truly believe that I had the most blessed childhood, objectively speaking. But since my brain has always focused only on the negative moments from my past, it took me a while to come up with something good. It feels as though my memory only holds the bad stuff.

One good memory is of a time when my entire family and I went to a small seaside town, rented an apartment, and walked to the sea every day. My sister and I were taking turns reading "Seacrow Island" by Astrid Lindgren and eating ice cream. We were exploring the town and eating tons of fruit. I don't remember exactly why it was such a happy time for me, but it feels like it was.

What a realization this question brought me..

Me too! And it’s quite common. Psychologist Rick Hanson talks about this on his website and in one of his books, describing how our brains tend to act like Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive ones.

I try to counteract this by taking a little time each day to think about what I’m grateful for. I simply acknowledge one or more things and, preferably, write them down. They don’t have to be different every day!
