If you notice that the Forum site is slow or glitching

Beloved Grand Eagle
I don't know what to tell you all - lots of slow page loading today, both here and on the wiki, and I suspect Forest might be traveling because I haven't had the normal quick response.

On Wednesday, a server reboot solved the same issues, but obviously it didn't last long.

Keep your fingers crossed, keep trying (I'm finding that it's inconsistent) and we will hope that it doesn't completely go down.

This evening it's fine, and we did nothing, which means the problem is inconsistent, which is THE WORST (like the way the noise your car has been making disappears as soon as you take it to the mechanic).

This may be where we're at for a while. Post on this thread if you document a significant slowdown across browsers and devices, so we can keep a record. This thread will remain pinned to the top of the General Discussion subforum until we can work on upgrading the server and updating the software in January.

Yeah, I noticed too, when I was briefly checking in between errands, and someone messaged me while I was out - but by the time I got home it had resolved. Same thing happened sometime in the last week or so - lagginess or not loading at all, then resolving within an hour.

Thanks for remembering to post it here, @Mani. Even brief incidents should be documented!

When I tried to load the forum, I got the following error message:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 96 bytes) in /home/ptpn/public_html/forum/library/Zend/Db/Statement/Mysqli.php on line 304

I couldn't get onto the site at all yesterday, it said that it couldn't connect to server. Relieved to get on today but it's being super slow.

Sorry this is happening and wanted to thank you for this site, I know it's helped so many people, including myself. Hope it starts behaving soon :)

Tell me about it, RR. I've been :nailbiting: for a while...

Let's keep an eye out for the timing. Someone mentioned they feel like it seems to happen between about 8pm and 11pm UTC (that's noon-3 where I am on the US West coast, or 3pm US East coast). I hadn't been paying super close attention to that aspect but I also feel like it's confined to several hours in the middle of my day - today it's been acting up since about 10am (6pm UTC). More corroboration of this might be useful, who knows? The inconsistency is frustrating, as are the wildly different error messages encountered.

I've noticed that the error messages vary wldly.

I've noticed that it goes out around 12pm-ish Central Time. Which is consistent to your west coast time. I'm actually surprised today that I was able to get the website pulled up this afternoon!

The site was down from late last evening to about 11:45 am Friday morning Pacific time - error messages were from a 2013 update with Forrests signature.

Oooh, that's a long time - and explains my experience this morning - so probably more random than we might have thought... I hope you didn't stay up all night to monitor it, @Cactusflower ;)

That would be pretty normal daytime hours for UK/Europe

If it helps, I pretty much always get the same error message:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 32 bytes) in/home/ptpn/public_html/forum/library/Zend/Db/Statement/Mysqli.php on line 294

Hi, everyone,

I'm glad to see that the server is a bit more responsive now. I don't think that we're out of the forest (no pun intended!), but, so I think that the only possible resolution is to build a new server with more updated software.

I'm afraid that the process of doing all of this is quite daunting. There are about 10 to 15 software products that I have to learn to get them to all work together, so it just takes a long time and a lot of work.

I'm hoping to get this done by mid-February. The task has proved too much in the past, but I've turned down some "day-job" work, so I'm hoping that will give me more time.

Once it is finally done, the community will have a very strong foundation going forward.

We'll also have greatly updated software. The problems that we have now are because the software products we use are very old. Therefore, the only way to fix everything is to update to newer versions of the same products (or occasionally, newer versions of alternative products). The silver lining is that the new software will come with new features.
