I am 26 and have been experiencing migraines for about 15 years. In the past 3 or 4 years they have gotten more frequent and more severe. I have been to all sorts of doctors - allergists, neurologists, headache specialists - and even a dietician. I've been on several medications, but try to minimize use of prescriptions because of the fear of rebound headaches and the awful side effects I tend to experience. I have always considered a majority of my migraines to be weather/pressure-related, but in the last few years I have found that certain foods seem to trigger my migraines as well. As a result, I have become super worried about what I am eating and have a pretty restricted diet. Recently, I had my blood tested for food sensitivities and went through a very strict exclusion diet, which only seem to aggravate the situation. As difficult as that was, I would have tried anything. I was desperate!
This past weekend, some good friends mentioned Dr. Sarno's books and how it changed their life. I read the book over the past couple of days and although I am not the type to accept these concepts normally, I have tried most physical solutions to no avail. I guess you would say I am desperate enough to believe in this although I expect it might take more time and effort for me than it has for others. The hardest part might be going back to eating foods that I "know" cause me to experience migraines, and not letting that fear become a distraction for my mind.
I definitely fit the personality type described in Dr. Sarno's book. I am an overachiever, perfectionist, take criticism very poorly, always try to make everyone else happy, etc. I suppose it is making my subconscious a little angry... Hopefully I am able to deal with it through this program!
