Hello,
I'm on Day 1 of the SEP and getting my intro out there. I've been in pain for pretty much 24/7 the last 8+ years. What started out as my lower back just feeling kind of "odd" progressed over the course of several months to be quite excruciating - barely able to get out of bed, sweating and nausea due to the pain...I'm sure some or most of you can relate. It's been 8 years of failed medical interventions, including failed surgery. When the lady in the 20/20 video started rattling off all of the things she'd tried, it resonated deeply with me as I've tried everything she did, to no avail. In many ways, the constant pain has ruined my life.
I came across the book, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection and I'm almost finished. What Dr. Sarno described in that book matched me perfectly. I completely saw so many facets of my personality, experience, and symptoms in those pages that it was like looking in a mirror. Given that none of the medical interventions have been effective so far (at least not for any period of time...I believe now that any short-term, two-week benefit I consistently get across treatments is placebo), I HAVE to believe this theory. The hardest part is believing when the pain is at a 10, which these days feels like most mornings.
Despite how long I've been battling with this, I refuse to give in. My passion/hobby is competitive bodybuilding and I will not let this put me in retirement. The training sessions are often quite painful and practicing posing is even more excruciating, but I will not yield. In addition to this, my main motivations for beating this are my two sons, aged 3 and 5. They need their Dad to "show up". I do all I can but I know I can do more if I wasn't in so much pain all the time. I'm too young to be sidelined by this and have way too much to live for, especially my wife and kids as well as the goals I have for bodybuilding. I want to be the best father and husband I can be and be an example and legacy for my children.
