I am currently seeing a psychologist for treatment of chronic migraine. My first session was about a month or so ago. After listening to Healing Back Pain by John Sarno as an audio book on a long flight, I became very optimistic that my chronic head pain was TMS. I could see my personality on those pages, the perfectionism, the pressure, the goodism, the rage. I laughed while listening. At this point I had momentum, I was full of energy, excited about getting my life back. I was ready to think psychologically from this point forward. Of course, it wasn't that easy. I fully grasped this concept of TMS, yet the pain was still there. When my psychologist explained that migraine was much more complex and I would need a daily prescription medication to increase my threshold, that's when things took a turn. The fear came flooding back in. I am currently stuck, debating whether migraine is a neurological disorder or TMS, or both? I worry that treating my symptoms with a daily prescription medication will perpetuate my chronic migraine. I worry I'm fixing the symptom or result, but not the root cause.
