Day 1

Fay

Newcomer
I had tremendous back pain around 6 years ago and miraculously managed to come across Dr Sarno's book "Healing Back Pain" (this after having cortisone injections and spending a week in bed unable to move). I read his book in one go, threw away all the anti-inflammation medicine and trusted absolutely his advice. I remember one part, where he said don't be surprised if the next day the pain has moved to a different place - that's exactly what happened, the next day it was between my shoulder blades! It really reinforced the fact that he knows what he's talking about. Then the pain disappeared completely and all was fine until November last year. I felt a twinge in the lower back during a Pilates class, which progressed over Christmas to pain in practically every part of my body. Really excruciating pain. It has now settled in the right side - shoulder, upper arm, wrist and knee. I also have a general weakness in both legs, even getting out of bed is difficult. I'm really hoping this Program can help, I obviously need to work things out, going back to childhood issues that are unresolved to this day (I'm now 54).
Thanks for listening to my day 1 story.

Hi Fay,

Welcome to the Forum and the SEP. This program has helped many people. It sounds like you're having a rough go of it, and so have most members here. We understand.

I had terrible foot pain, and now I'm fine. As you say, you just have to jump back on the Sarno wagon, and do some more ---and perhaps deeper, work. Doing a daily practice like the SEP provides will really help.

Here I am skiing after many doctors thought I needed surgery. I could hardly walk. You can do it too!

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your support, it's a great comfort to hear all these success stories. I'm glad that you could return to your active life; that's really all I want as well, to be as active as I was before November last year. I'm trying not to get frustrated with the pain - when it lessens I feel hopeful but then when it comes back even stronger I don't know quite what to do. But I will continue with the SEP so all the good advice sinks into my brain.
Best

Hi, Fay. You say the pain moves around. That is a very strong indicator that the pains are caused by TMS, either repressed emotions or personality traits such as perfectionism and/or being a "goodist," trying too hard to please people and be liked. If the latter, try to modify those traits. But you do say you have some issues from your youth that are being repressed. Keep journaling to come to terms with them. Andy's success is encouraging.
