Chronic Knee Pain

Hello all,
I feel like I have no choice but to post here as I want to see if anyone else has similar experiences. Around 3 months ago I noticed a pain at the bottom edge of my kneecap. After a few google searches I thought patellar tendinitis. I am an avid runner and increased my mileage in July so it made sense. I substituted the running with walking. After 2 weeks my knee swole up out of nowhere. I decided to see a physio who also diagnosed me with tendinitis based on my clinical presentation, but he did note that swelling is not characteristic. After no further improvement I decided to get an MRI which showed an abnormality called bipartite patella. Usually asymptomatic, and has also been for me especially since I have it in both knees and my left knee gives me no problems. The MRI showed torn cartilage and a bone stress response. However I have no pain in the area of my knee (outside of the kneecap) and only have pain at the bottom. There was no significant tendinitis on the MRI. That was one month ago and I have stopped all exercises for my lower body, no running or walking. My steps are limited to work, which isn’t that much. The swelling and pain at the bottom of my kneecap has remained. I feel a bit stuck as the abnormality found is also present in my left knee, without any problems, and I don’t feel the pain on that outside area of my knee. But then again, if it is tendinitis that doesn’t usually cause such persistent swelling (3 months now). Has anyone any similar experiences?

What’s your TMS knowledge like, have you done any programs? What was going on in your life leading up to the pain? How do you treat yourself?

Also what is your approach to running like, do you do it because it brings joy or is it something you do to get a break from your brain?

Persistent swelling for three months, especially without improvement after resting, deserves further investigation. A bipartite patella can be asymptomatic, so the MRI finding may not necessarily explain your symptoms. I'd recommend seeing an orthopedic knee specialist to review the MRI and assess other possible causes, including cartilage or bone-related injuries. I wouldn't resume running until you've had a clearer diagnosis and treatment plan.
