Alex B. Can tms make medical condition worse?

Hi, I have systemic osteoarthritis and joint hypermobility in my knees. My spine causes me the worse pain, plus pain , pins and needles numbness in legs and feet. Can a person have a real medical condition but TMS makes it worse? or is it all TMS. Thank you.

Hi there,

Anxiety, fear, preoccupation, stress, pressure...all of these things can most certainly exacerbate a variety of medical issues, chronic pain or otherwise. This is why it is important to get a TMS diagnosis, so you can know how to approach what is affecting you personally. If you have multiple tests confirming a structural issue yet you notice you pain levels are affected by emotional circumstances, you can potentially benefit from addressing the underlying issues. Getting a very clear distinction on what is TMS vs. what is structural can get tricky when there is a clear and unequivocal structural problem but learning to manage your anxiety and fear can sometimes be one of the best ways of managing such a challenging circumstance.
