Day 1 My day 1

Hi all, I’m starting on the SEP and so I’m creating my Day 1 post. It says to keep it brief, so I’ll do my best.

I have read The MindBody Prescription and have a request in at my local library for Healing Back Pain. I completed Week 0.

Admittedly, I’m not at a point where I 100% believe my pain is all psychologically based, but I believe it *can* be, and there are indications it could be so.

The past few days I’ve been educating myself on TMS and I feel like my back pain may have improved some - I did strain a muscle on my right side, which is acute and seems to have a real physical cause; however, my left side seems to have less of the underlying chronic pain I’ve been experiencing for about 7 years now. I also experience upper back/neck pain, which I think may be improving since starting to look into this all, and some rib pain. I fractured my ribs in about 4 years ago. They are healed but I still get pain on and off.

Interestingly, my ribs started acting up (and my back) after I started the Week 0 work and after I started to think I felt an improvement. Perhaps my brain is trying to convince me it’s not psychological, but the fact that my pain is moving around and that it increased just when I started thinking about it decreasing (and when I had to return to work after a long weekend) seems a bit suspicious.

I’ve tried physical therapy, massage and manual therapy, facet joint injections, medications and chiro. Pain still persists.

Looking forward to getting it to stop.

Welcome!! You will find this community welcoming and VERY helpful. I'm glad you are here :) PS. I LOVE poly dactyl Cats!! <3

Hi! Just a personal opinion but I actually think Healing Back Pain has better explanations when it comes to TMS and is more informative, even though it was written first (and not just for those with back pain), so I think this is a good move :)

I'm encouraged by all of this - muscles and strains heal, so after the normal healing times for the level of strain then TMS is highly likely.

As you said, the ribs are healed, so pain here (especially inconsistent pain) is also likely TMS - you're spot on in that old injury sites are often targeted so to speak by the brain (I was the same in that I had 6 years of chronic pelvic pain from an injury that likely healed in 3 weeks) - another great TMS sign too in that pain is being modulated by your attention.

I’ve tried physical therapy, massage and manual therapy, facet joint injections, medications and chiro. Pain still persists.

More great evidence, welcome and I think you are in a terrific position to recover! :)

Thank you! I’m feeling a little discouraged today (I made another post in Support) but I’m still doing the SEP and trying to remain hopeful. My brain just keeps trying to bring me back to believing my body is broken when it really isn’t. I feel like it latched on to me feeling better and starting to deal with my feelings and now it’s trying to distract me even more.

Regardless, I’m sticking around! Got Healing Back Pain and The Way Out to read as well.

Did my day 5 journaling activity today and had a good, needed cry! (I’m in therapy too for support on the processing emotion/psychological side of things).

Anyway, thanks for your response! I’m glad I found this book and this site and this concept!

You are doing great Patty. For me, The 1st few days of uncovering and investgating the feelings and issues I had repressed and ignored was really hard, if Im honest, IT SUCKED. I cried multiple times a day for the 1st week. Sometimes I could tell you why and other times I needed to let the tears come with no judgement. Keep going🫶
