Michio Kaku on 'The Future of the Mind' (i.e. 'Brain')

BruceMC

Beloved Grand Eagle
Just listened to this last night on KQED and was wondering if any of us here on the TMS Forum noticed the same fallacies I mentioned in my comment down at the bottom of the page?

Some things Prof. Kaku does have right: that modern neuroscience is beginning to confirm how the physical organization of the brain confirms Sigmund Freud's insights about the ego, superego and id. However, when he ventures into uploading new 'good' emotions for 'bad' emotions, it sounds to me as if he's on way shakey ground, not just ethically and morally. You'll see in my comment that I notice how he talks Einstein and Planck but is really speaking Newton, Locke and Descartes dogma about the the fundamental dualism of body and mind. IOWs: His observations are cutting edge, but his thinking is quite mechanical. What about the mind-brain's innate ability to process and transform 'bad' emotions and memories through "reconsolidation"? What about dreaming? We already possess the ability to fix our neural pathways through endoplasticity. Do we really need to physically intervene in the process? Wouldn't it be better to facilitate that process through therapy?

Just my two cents this cloudy afternoon!
