I’m fairly new to this thinking and I firmly believe in it . I’m still in the middle of reading The way out by Alan Gordon and my copy of John Sarnos book arrives tomorrow . But as I embrace this way of thinking and mind set , my mind shifts over to thinking this is the last thing I can try … I have nothing else to try because I’ve done it all to try and fix /heal my back pain . I think what of this doesn’t work , then what?? I guess it is fear I guess I am fearful of this not working and I need to stop that thinking and keep saying to myself this will work! Am I on the right track and what I’m feeling is this normal??

I think that it would be helpful to understand this as FEAR, plain and simple. Feel it, make friends with it as best you can, develop self-compassion (as best you can). One of the things I like about this book is the emphasis on feeling safe, and how feelings of not feeling safe lead to symptoms. So it seems to me you're getting a powerful insight into your mind and history here.

And yes, it is natural to feel fear, in all its forms. For someone with chronic symptoms, this is even more so. Take heart and look for genuine ways to re-assure yourself that things are OK.

One is by developing a daily mindfulness practice. You learn to hang with the thoughts and feelings which are natural, and not anything to get too upset about. Including fear.

Another technique is to come into this moment, feeling and seeing your environment. Is this moment actually threatening? It may be that this moment, without future thinking or shame, or regret, or ----- is remarkably safe. This is a deep lesson which you can learn over and over again.

Good luck in your work and welcome!
