You don’t need a TMS specific therapist, but someone who understands the mind body connection is preferable. The information from many TMS specialists suggest that Family Systems, ISTPD or EMDR all are mind-body related even if the therapists are not TMS specialists. To me the most important thing is that your therapist helps you recognize your feelings and behavior, the patterns you repeat and their impact on your physical body and though process creates stress and symptoms. I have used a few therapists and coaches and it was never about unloading, and they provided guidance and feedback, asking thoughtful questions and making suggestions.
It’s also about creating a relationship of compassionate trust, you need to be able to feel safe enough to unpack your darkest stuff, not just surface life complaints. It’s about being guided to inner reflection outside of therapy sessions so you can do the work recommended-by Sarno.
