    (Non TMS books!)

hi! I’ve recently gotten back into reading and figured since you’re all wonderful, intelligent people you probably have some good recommendations!

I just finished Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse and highly recommend it! Lots of good tidbits about going through life and overcoming and finding meaning in suffering!

I am a voracious reader of books and listen to audio books but I would not classify my taste as “good”. I read a lot of biographies. I just re-read the autobiographies of all the Supremes, and am getting ready to pull out my beat poetry again.

Biographies are always great to read, imo.

    I too love a biography.

I'm not a big fiction reader; I more than tend to prefer non-fiction to dip into, like these two books by Miranda Keeling. (If you think they might appeal and you're not a Brit, I'd suggest getting the Kindle version, so you can more quickly and easily look up the British references in them... places, foods etc.)

The Year I Stopped To Notice https://www.amazon.com/Year-I-Stopped-Notice-ebook/dp/B09JVD5QXY?ref_=ast_author_dp&th=1&psc=1 (Amazon.com)

The Place I'm In: What I see when I stop to notice https://www.amazon.com/Place-Im-Wha...yoQEAsvum4ztx1rZLg3nST8&qid=1762348764&sr=8-1

(I listen to the author's twice weekly podcasts lasting just 4-5 minutes a pop where she visits places and describes what's going on around her; takes me out of myself for a while https://freshair.audio/podcast/stopping-to-notice/)

I like autobiographies and memoirs too! A few I’ve enjoyed are born a crime by Trevor Noah, educated by Tara Westover and I’m glad my mom died by Jeannette Mccurdy.

One of my favorite ever writers is British travel writer Lois Pryce who writes about her unconventional travels to unconventional places.
I loved The Revolutionary Ride about her travels to Iran and also her book about traveling through Africa. Biographical snippets of her life and her passion to ride. Her husband is also a travel writer and travel adventure enthusiast.

Such a good book. He's as brilliant with the written word as he is with the spoken word. I miss him on TDS - I hope he's happy not being tied down to the show!

I mostly read for pure easy-to-digest escapism. It's my guilty pleasure. I love sci-fi and would recommend anything by John Scalzi - any of his series (famously the Old Man's War series) or his numerous standalones.

Jan, I spread the gamut on reading. Really like me some good lit, but love escapism even more. Sci-fi and fantasy are some of my faves. Always looking for good authors. Never heard of this guy. Can’t wait to try!

@Cactusflower — I remember you telling me about Lois Pryce—how she inspired you and helped you heal by borrowing her bravery and living vicariously. I remember looking for her books, but somehow got sidetracked. Just found one on Amazon kindle for cheap. I will definitely check her out.

@BloodMoon —this is delightful! I feel like I notice things like this, and it’s what I love most in good novels. The descriptions of little things in life. Her collecting them is a brilliant idea. And I agree, what a nice little escape.

Books have kept me alive my whole life! I love books so much so thanks everyone!

I read a lot, but there is one author who I've read all her books--Tana French. She writes psychological mysteries that take place in Ireland.

Another favorite book in the last couple of years is Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.

Oh yes, I'll absolutely second this one! And I'll check out Tana French, too.
Sy Montgomery, a naturalist and wonderful writer, for books about animals and our relationship with them. She's written two books about octopus. Or octopuses. Or is it octopii?
